In the field of high-speed PCB design, a common misconception among junior engineers is whether impedance values should be maximized or minimized. The reality is that PCB impedance should neither be too high nor too low; impedance matching is the key.
The characteristic impedance of a PCB trace is determined by trace width, copper thickness, dielectric thickness, and the dielectric constant (). Common standard values include 50Ω, 75Ω, 90Ω, and 100Ω. Impedance mismatch leads to signal reflections, causing ringing, overshoot, and undershoot. In severe cases, this results in bit errors or system failure.

Modern PCB design adheres to the principle of impedance matching, where the transmission line impedance must align with the source output impedance and the load input impedance. The designer's goal is not to pursue extreme values but to ensure precise calculation and simulation so that the transmission line impedance matches the system impedance, keeping the reflection coefficient within ±10%. In the high-speed era, "appropriateness" always trumps "magnitude"—matching is optimal.
