PCB layout requirements for PCIe interface

Time:2026-02-25 Views:1

PCI-Express, abbreviated as "PCI-e," is a high-speed serial computer expansion bus standard. PCI-E belongs to the high-speed serial point-to-point dual-channel high-bandwidth transmission category, where connected devices are allocated dedicated channel bandwidth and do not share the bus bandwidth. Its main advantage is its high data transfer rate.

The main differences between PCI-E 2.0 and PCI-E 3.0 are as follows:

1) **Maximum Data Rate Difference**: PCI-E 2.0 can only provide a maximum data rate of 5 GT/s, while PCI-E 3.0 achieves a data transfer rate of 8 GT/s, increasing the bus bandwidth. The PCI-E 3.0 specification increases the data transfer rate to 8 GT/s while maintaining backward compatibility with PCI-E 2.x/1.x, continuing to support 2.5 GT/s and 5 GT/s signaling mechanisms.

2) **Encoding Method Difference**: PCI Express 3.0 operates at a frequency of 8 GT/s and eliminates the traditional 8b/10b encoding. It introduces several technologies, including enhanced signaling, data integrity, transmission/reception equalization, PLL improvements, clock data recovery, and universal extensions.

Corresponding to the different characteristics of PCI-E 2.0 and PCI-E 3.0, there are also different PCB design requirements.
