Solder Mask Silkscreen, commonly known as "green solder mask" or "green oil," involves printing a layer of protective ink over the bare copper traces. It only exposes the pads and test points. Its function is to provide electrical insulation, prevent oxidation, and protect the copper from environmental corrosion, thereby preventing short circuits between adjacent traces.
Legend Silkscreen (or Character Silkscreen) is the white text you see—component designators like R1, C2, chip U1, polarity markings, version numbers, and logos. It is printed on top of the solder mask and is used for assembly, debugging, and maintenance identification.
Pros: Low cost, excellent ink opacity, ideal for mass production.

Debugging and Repair: During prototyping and after-sales service, silkscreen designators allow technicians to quickly locate specific resistors, capacitors, or ICs. A "naked" board without markings significantly increases repair difficulty and time.
Version Control and Traceability: Printing version numbers, batch QR codes, and manufacturer logos helps distinguish between hardware revisions, preventing batch failures caused by mixing incompatible versions.
Safety Warnings: High-voltage warnings and grounding symbols provide critical safety cues for testing personnel.
Misconception 1: Silkscreen is just for looks and doesn't affect circuit performance.
Reality: If ink covers a pad, it causes solderability issues. If characters are too close to pads, ink bleed can reduce SMT yield. On high-density boards, silkscreen errors cause real production failures.
Misconception 2: Silkscreen can be scaled down infinitely.
Reality: Shrinking characters below 0.5mm often results in broken lines or "blobbing" during manufacturing, rendering the text illegible even under a magnifying glass.
Misconception 3: Solder mask and silkscreen are the same thing.
Reality: Solder mask protects the circuitry; silkscreen provides identification. They are two distinct manufacturing processes.
